AI for Cyprus businesses, without the cloud
Run an open-weight model on a computer in your own office, connect it to your documents and put a simple chat in front of it. Your staff get summaries, search and drafts, and the client files never leave the building.
What happens when someone pastes a file into a public chatbot
The text goes to the provider’s servers, usually outside Cyprus. On many consumer plans the chat can be used to improve the provider’s models unless someone switched that off. For a contract, a patient letter or a client’s bank statement, that is a decision your staff should not be making alone at their desk.
Banning AI rarely works. People use it on their phones instead, and you lose sight of it completely. The better move is to give them a tool that is as fast and keeps the data in-house.
What “private AI” means in practice
Three parts, all on hardware you control:
- An open-weight model. Models you can download and run yourself, from families such as Llama, Mistral, Gemma or Qwen.
- Your documents, indexed. The system searches your own files and answers with the passage it used, so staff can check the source.
- A login and a log. Each person signs in, and every question is recorded, so you know who asked what.
What it does well, and where to stay careful
It is good at summarising long documents, finding the right clause across hundreds of files, drafting replies and translating between English, Greek and Russian. It still makes mistakes, so it drafts and a person decides. Figures, deadlines and anything legal get checked against the source before they go to a client.
What you need
- One office PC or small server with a modern graphics card. For summaries and search across an office’s files, a mid-size model on a single machine is enough.
- A local network you already have. Nothing has to be reachable from the internet.
- A backup of the index, like any other business data.
Setup is a few days of work, not a project for a whole team. After that it runs like any other office machine.
Where cloud AI is still fine
Public information, marketing text, social media posts and anything you would publish anyway. Keep the cloud for that and the private system for client files. Write the rule down in one paragraph so everyone knows which is which.
A first step this month
- Ask your team which AI tools they already use, and for what.
- List the documents that must never leave the office.
- Pick one task to try privately, such as summarising incoming contracts.
- Run it for two weeks, then decide whether to roll it out.
